Synthesis Design is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s Cy Morgan Drafting & Design Scholarship.
Established in 2020 by Synthesis Design founder and Principal Curtis Krahn, the Cy Morgan Drafting & Design Scholarship is awarded annually to one Grade 12 student who has completed a senior-level drafting or design course and has been accepted into a post-secondary program to pursue further education in a related field.
This year we had 3 stand out applications. All three applicants exemplify the creativity, dedication, and passion for design that this scholarship was created to recognize so we decided to award scholarships to all three students!
This year’s first recipient, Lina Kang, is a talented young artist. Lina’s work combines thoughtful storytelling, technical skill, and cultural research. Her character design projects draw inspiration from Korean history and culture while demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of visual development and world-building. Lina will be attending Emily Carr University of Art + Design in the 2D Experimental Animation program, where she plans to continue developing her skills in character design and visual storytelling. Her impressive academic achievements include top scores in AP Drawing and AP 2D Design, along with outstanding performance in IB Visual Arts.
The second recipient, Bernice Tang, has distinguished herself through her exceptional work in Drafting 12, AP Art, and a variety of architectural design projects. Driven by a passion for architecture, Bernice has explored design both inside and outside the classroom. Her AP 3D Design portfolio focused on the architecture of her hometown, Hong Kong, and she challenged herself further by competing in the Fitzwilliam College Architectural Design Competition, where she developed site plans, elevations, sections, and learned a new CAD platform independently. Beyond her own studies, Bernice shares her knowledge by teaching children 3D modelling and printing, while also contributing to her school community as a member of the Sentinel Mural Team. These experiences reflect her commitment to collaboration, mentorship, and the positive impact thoughtful design can have on people and communities. This fall, Bernice will begin her studies in MSci Architecture at The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (UCL), one of the world's leading architecture programs.
Our third and final recipient, Dennise Pascua, has excelled in applying design thinking to real-world challenges, developing skills in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, technical drafting, and 3D modeling. Her portfolio showcases a range of projects, including a courtyard redevelopment concept, architectural house plans and renderings, engineering design projects, and fabricated metalwork, highlighting both her technical proficiency and creative problem-solving abilities. According to her Engineering instructor, Rob Olson, Dennise consistently demonstrates a rare blend of technical proficiency and artistic vision. Her work in engineering competitions regularly ranked among the strongest in her grade, reflecting both an understanding of structural design and a keen eye for aesthetics. This fall, Dennise will continue pursuing her passion for architecture at BCIT's Architectural and Building Technology program, taking the next step toward her goal of becoming an architect.
